Mark runs ... through life

Ironman

I’ve spent most of the day online, listening to the Ford Ironman World Championship from Kona, Hawaii.

A 2.4 mile swim, followed by 112 miles on a bike, followed by a 26.2 mile run.  I’m not only amazed that people do this, but that so many people do it, and all kinds of people do it!  Twenty year old students do it.  Seventy nine year old nuns do it.  Physically challenged men and women do it.

Why can’t I do it?  What can I learn from these Ironmen? The reason they can do it is  they are committed … unbelievable focus and dedication to their goal.

It reminds me of the story of the chicken and the pig.  The chicken contributes to breakfast, but the pig is committed to it.

I’ve completed three marathons and after each of them I could barely walk for a week.  The elite ironmen and ironwomen can finish this race in a little over eight hours.  Even the slowest make it in around fifteen hours.

But the amazing thing is they finish!  That’s a real testament to their commitment.

In my wildest dreams I’d love to do an ironman.  Will I?  It’s doubtful, but I never thought I’d run a marathon.

Can I do it?  Maybe … but only if I commit.

Something else for my bucket list.

Keep running!
