Insane Prayers

13 But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. 14 The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”

15Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! Exodus 14:13-15.

Insanity:  : \in-sa-na-tē\ (noun) (a)extreme folly or unreasonableness  (b)doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Sometimes my prayer life is insane.  I pray to God to bless this and do that.  I pray to God to bless my efforts and smite my enemies.  I pray for the poor, the weak, and the suffering.

Pray, pray, pray, pray…

I say the same prayers everyday and expect God to pour out the heavens, cure cancer, help the poor, save the world.  First, let me say, I know God answers prayers.  I’ve seen it happen.  It’s happened to me, so I’m not discounting the power of prayer.  But when I pray an “insane prayer”, that is asking over and over and not getting an answer, maybe God’s trying to tell me something.

Is God using an unanswered prayer to talk to me?

In Exodus 14, the Israelites are fleeing Egypt with the armies of Pharaoh in hot pursuit.  They get to the edge of the Red Sea and Moses stops and tells everyone to sit back, relax, and watch the Lord work a miracle.

We all know the story.  God parts the Red Sea and the children of Israel escape the Egyptians, but a lot of the time we leave out something.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!

“I’ve done my part, Moses. If you want me to do a miracle, don’t just pray, do something!”  I call this the Nike verse – “just do it!”

I want God to help the poor.  I can volunteer at the mission.

I want God to relieve the pain of the sick.  I can go to the hospital and visit.

I want God to bless a ministry.  I can give my money or my time.

I want God to save the world.  Let it begin with me.

Are you praying an “insane prayer”?  Is God trying to tell you to act?
